TOSHIBA TO HALT CELLULAR HANDSET BUSINESS IN U.S.

WAYNE, N.J.-Toshiba America Consumer Products said it will suspend Toshiba-brand cellular phone operations in the United States due to dropping phone prices and the appreciation of the yen.

The company said it will monitor the situation and may re-enter the market when conditions improve. Toshiba still maintains plans to enter other areas of wireless, such as personal communications services and Cellular Digital Packet Data, sometime in the future.

Withdrawing from the cellular phone business will allow Toshiba to strengthen efforts in core areas, such as color TV and TV home entertainment products, the Wayne, N.J.-based firm said. Toshiba America Consumer Products is owned by Toshiba America Inc., a subsidiary of Toshiba Corp.
