North American Wireless Inc. announced NextWave Personal Communications Inc. is joining the NAWI team of companies planning to build a nationwide personal communications services network using Code Division Multiple Access technology.
“NextWave brings a tremendous amount of expertise, experience and strength to our nationwide network,” said Warren Courtade, vice president of PCS sales at NAWI. “Allen Salmasi [NextWave chairman and chief executive officer] is one of the early supporters of CDMA and clearly has a vision for the wireless telecommunications market.”
NextWave of San Diego and NAWI of Vienna, Va., also have agreed NAWI can offer NextWave’s services to resellers in markets where NextWave wins licenses.
Through its TELE*code subsidiary, NextWave is developing CDMA-based software products and engineering services, including specialized radio network design tools and services, network performance tools and wireless network gateway servers.
Century invests in GO
Century Telephone Enterprises Inc. said it is investing $20 million in GO Communications Corp. in exchange for a minority equity interest, between 10 and 15 percent.
Monroe, La.-based Century is a diversified telecom company, and is the 17th largest U.S. cellular operator with more than 225,000 subscribers in wireless markets in Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi and Michigan.
Alexandria, Va.-based GO intends to bid in the upcoming personal communications services auction, with hopes of acquiring wireless markets covering at least 25 million pops. GO has selected Global System for Mobile communications technology.
