OKLAHOMA CITY-A hearing is scheduled Tuesday in the civil lawsuit filed by AT&T Wireless Services against an Oklahoma City medical supply company that provides cellular phone emulation service.
AT&T received an emergency restraining order against Safari Communications on Jan. 8, and is seeking an injunction to close down Safari’s emulation operation.
Emulators alter the electronic serial number of an inactivated cellular phone so it will emulate the ESN of an activated phone and market the service as creating an extension phone for legitimate cellular customers.
Cellular carriers oppose the emulation business, saying the Federal Communications Commission requires each cellular phone to have a unique ESN. Carriers do not receive monthly access payments for the second “extension” phone.
