PHILLIPS CLOSES IN NETHERLANDS TO OPEN NEW PARIS OPERATIONS

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands-Philips Electronics said it will dissolve its infrastructure division in the Netherlands and open a new unit in France to manufacture wireless phones, pagers and other personal communications items.

AT&T Corp. recently bought the infrastructure assets of Philips in Paris and Nuremberg, Germany. Now, the Communications Systems unit is being dismantled and activities not purchased by AT&T have been reassigned to other Philips groups.

The Mobile Phone/Wide Area Paging business unit will become a stand-alone division named Philips Consumer Communications, and have headquarters in Le Mans, France. It will concentrate on digital and analog wireless phones, numeric and alphanumeric pagers, corded phones, answering machines and screen phones.

The Smart Cards & Systems division will become a stand-alone operating company within the Industry Electronics division of Philips, the company said. Other plans call for the Private Mobile Radio unit to report to Philips UK.

Philips’ Data Communications division will be placed under the Business Electronics group of the Consumer Electronics unit. The Business Communications Systems and Facsimile divisions also will go under Business Electronics/Consumer Electronics.
