STUDY SAYS CELLULAR TO TOP 100M USERS

WASHINGTON-A new study published by Economic & Management Consultants International Inc. says worldwide cellular demand will break the 100 million subscriber mark this year.

The publication, “World Cellular Markets: 1996,” predicts worldwide demand will continue to soar, reaching 200 million in 1999 and topping 284 million in 2001.

In 1995, the Asia-Pacific region gained 10.4 million cellular subscribers, almost a half million more than North America, the study says. However, North America maintained the largest subscriber base at the end of 1995 with 42 percent of the estimated 85 million total world cellular subscribers, followed by western Europe and Asia-Pacific, each with 25 percent, and Latin America with 4 percent.
