L.M. Ericsson announced it has won a contract from Telecel to provide Digital Cross Connect for Portugal’s Global System for Mobile communications network. The DXX Digital Cross Connect system will enhance the network that covers most of Portugal, Ericsson said. The order comes to Ericsson from collaboration between Ericsson Radio Access AB and Tellabs International Inc.

Omnitel Pronto Italia, Italy’s first private Global System for Mobile communications provider, announced it has gained 100,000 customers after three months of commercial service. Omnitel predicts it will cover 50 percent of the nation, or 84 percent of the population, by the end of May.

Motorola Inc. announced Usha Martin Telekom’s digital cellular network in Calcutta, India, is now equipped with Centigram Communications Corp.’s VoiceMemo, a service provided through Motorola’s IN2 Solution Center. The service was installed on Usha Martin’s Global System for Mobile communications cellular network provided by Motorola. Motorola said Usha Martin is one of many cellular operators to offer its customers Centigram’s service.

Mobistar announced it has chosen Northern Telecom Ltd. to provide radio infrastructure equipment for its new Global System for Mobile communications network in Belgium. Mobistar was recently awarded Belgium’s second national license to operate mobile telephone service. Under the terms of the two-year supply agreement, valued at $33 million, Nortel will supply, install and commission several hundred sites with complete radio equipment for the region and capital city of Brussels and the region of Wallonia. The network is scheduled to begin operation by the end of August, Nortel said.

InterDigital Communications Corp. announced it has signed a contract, valued at $41 million, with PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia for UltraPhone Time Division Multiple Access digital wireless local loop systems. The Export-Import Bank of the United States has committed to provide financing for the project, InterDigital said. Indonesia is purchasing the systems under its Rural Area Telecommunications Project, which is part of a long-term program to upgrade the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, InterDigital said. InterDigital will deliver the equipment in late 1996. Including previously installed equipment, Indonesia now has ordered more than $80 million worth of UltraPhone equipment from InterDigital.

Telular Corp. announced it has recieved a $25 million order from Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group for its PhoneCell SXH fixed wireless terminal. Motorola will deploy the terminal in Hungary, supporting its contract with MATAV, a Hungarian telephone service provider. Part of the order will be delivered between May and October with the remaining scheduled to be delivered in 1997, Telular said.
