CLINTON NAMES MICKEY KANTOR TO COMMERCE

President Clinton late Friday appointed U.S. Trade Representative Mickey Kantor the new Secretary of Commerce. Kantor replaces Ron Brown who was buried last week following an airplane crash that killed him and 34 others on an international trade mission.

The Administration previously had named Commerce Undersecretary for Technology Mary Good acting head of the department as reported in RCR’s story on page 10 of this issue.

Good said on Friday, “Ambassador Kantor is the right choice as we will face new challenges and opportunities in the coming year, where Kantor’s previous role as chief negotiator and trade representative will serve the Department well. The Commerce Department is firmly committed to continuing the legacy of achievement in trade, technology and sustainable economic development put in place under Secretary Brown.”

She added that the Commerce Department welcomes Kantor’s leadership and experience toward the agency’s goal of providing greater economic opportunity for all Americans.
