LISLE, Ill.-Telecommunications equipment manufacturer Tellabs Inc. announced it has acquired all of the outstanding share capital of Steinbrecher Corp., a Burlington, Mass.-based provider of wideband wireless communications systems, for about $76 million. The two companies first reported merger negotiation early in March.
“The demand for telecommunications in the newly industrialized nations of the world has never been stronger,” said Peter Guglielmi, president of Tellabs International Inc. “Against this backdrop, Tellabs and Steinbrecher have combined resources to help speed the deployment of wireless local telephone service in countries where improvement in communications is a keystone for future economic growth.”
Tellabs said its initial efforts will concentrate on Latin America and the Pacific Rim.
Development of the Minicell family of cellular base station products for public indoor microcell and wireless local loop is being completed now, and the product is expected to go into field trial next winter, Tellabs said. The company added that other radio base station products address Cellular Digital Packet Data applications.
Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services voice and data transport network access systems.
