L.M. Ericsson announced it has signed an agreement with the Guangdong Post and Telecommunications Administration for the installation of intelligent networks in the Guangdong province, China. Ericsson said it will implement its latest IN software and hardware. The agreement also includes an IN service management system and service creation system. The IN services will be introduced by GPTA throughout the Guangdong Province in the next few months.

Geotek Communications Inc. and Canadian companies Cogeco Cable Inc. and Techcom Inc. announced their intent to form a joint venture, tentatively called GeoNet Canada, to launch a Canadian mobile wireless communications service based on Geotek’s proprietary Frequency Hopping Multiple Access technology. Geotek said it will own about 45 percent of GeoNet through a two-level company structure that is compliant with Canadian foreign ownership requirements. GeoNet will focus on providing advanced mobile communications services to business organizations that rely on real-time communications to manage and coordinate fleets of vehicles and to maximize the productivity of mobile workers, Geotek said.

Motorola Inc.’s Advanced Messaging System Division announced the successful demonstration of the FLEX-TD paging system for Tokyo Telemessage Inc. The FLEX-TD protocol-based system is scheduled to begin commercial service this summer in TTM’s Tokyo network, said Motorola. The infrastructure system includes a software upgrade for TTM’s Motorola paging terminal, a redundant-configuration radio frequency controller for encoding the messages into the FLEX-TD high-speed protocol, and network interface units that manage TTM’s base stations, said Motorola.

Comsat RSI Plexsys Wireless Systems said it has signed a contract with Boatphone, a subsidiary of Cable & Wireless plc that provides cellular operations in the Caribbean. Comsat said it will supply Boatphone with its newly released P-series equipment, including the PlexCell 1 mobile switch center and base station, and will supervise the installation and commissioning of the equipment. The equipment will be supplied on the islands of Antigua, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Montserrat and Dominica to provide seamless roaming throughout those islands and is expected to be ready for service by the end of August, Comsat said.

Glenayre Technologies Inc. announced it has supplied Espectra-Panama with paging equipment for its nationwide network in Panama. When installation of the equipment is complete, Espectra’s alphanumeric network will serve about 10,000 subscribers. The operator dispatch, or telephone answering, system has an automatic call distribution module, six operator positions and digital interconnection to the public switched telephone network, Glenayre said.
