BALA CYNWYD, Pa.-The Associated Group Inc. and Comcast Cellular Communications Inc. announced they will launch a trial this summer in New Jersey of the TruePosition Cellular Location System.
The service trial will span a 50-mile stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike, including Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties.
The system, designed by The Associated Group, is an overlay system that enables wireless carriers to determine the location of any cellular or personal communication services phone within an area of 500 feet or less, said The Associated Group. The system uses advanced Time Difference Arrival technology to calculate the latitude, longitude, velocity and direction of travel for any designated wireless telephone or transmitter.
The Associated Group said the location information can then be forwarded in real time for use in four different applications: emergency 911 location, fraud detection and location, location sensitive billing and fleet management.
Emergency 911 location will allow emergency authorities to locate wireless callers. The Associated Group said cellular callers represent about 25 percent of all emergency calls placed.
Fraud detection and location can be used by carriers to reduce losses associated with fraud by identifying the location of fraud culprits while unauthorized calls are still in progress, said The Associated Group.
Carriers can use location sensitive billing to offer new rate plan choices to their customers. The Associated Group said rate plans can be customized for individual users based on incremental calling zones in addition to the traditional type and time of day variables. Fleet management will enable companies to locate their mobile work force without purchasing or installing new hardware in the vehicles.
TruePosition can be used by dispatchers to track the cellular phones already installed in taxis, trucks and buses.
