LUCENT WILL OFFER CIRCUIT-SWITCHED DATA EQUIPMENT

MURRAY HILL, N.J.-Lucent Technologies announced a new addition to its current Cellular Digital Packet Data system that enables cellular operators to cost-effectively offer data transmission service wherever voice service is offered.

Lucent said its new addition, circuit-switched CDPD, extends the company’s open systems CDPD implementation and superior operator friendly network management capabilities to help customers deploy and support data service offerings on a much wider basis.

With circuit-switched CDPD, users can connect to the CDPD network wherever there is cellular service, even in areas where not enough data traffic exists to justify an investment in CDPD-equipped base stations, said Lucent.

“CDPD is most prevalent in metropolitan areas, where operators have installed the required equipment,” said Ed Coleman, CDPD product team leader at the wireless infrastructure unit for Lucent. “But mobile workers frequently need data services while traveling in rural areas as well. Fortunately, circuit-switched CDPD uses the existing analog infrastructure to extend the wireless coverage economically and seamlessly.”
