MOTOROLA TO TRIAL CDMA IN SHANGHAI

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc. and Shanghai Posts & Telecommunications Administration have signed an agreement to trial Motorola’s fixed wireless telephone system in Shanghai using Code Division Multiple Access technology.

The CDMA digital wireless local loop system will operate at 1.9 GHz, said Motorola. The trial will serve telephone users in Shanghai, including its Pudong district, a newly developed residential and commercial area.

Motorola said the CDMA WiLL system will target residents on the country’s telephone waiting list, small business and home office users who will be able to take advantage of fixed and advanced mobile personal communications services.

“The China telecommunications market presents a challenging environment in which operators like Shanghai PTA must keep up with sprawling population growth and a changing urban and rural landscape,” said Richard Sell, vice president and general manager of Motorola’s North Asia Cellular Infrastructure Division. “The WiLL system and its CDMA technology provide telephone operators with a highly effective vehicle in which to leapfrog the typical three-to-five-year timeframe for installation of a wireline system, while offering a quality digital network for the future.”

As part of the trial, Motorola said its Wireless Access Division will deploy 100 fixed wireless terminals and one SC 4850 base station at 1.9 GHz. Shanghai PTA will provide a V5.2 open public switched telephone network interface on its existing switching platform. The V5.2 digital interface is a European Telecommunications Standard Institute standard for wireless local loop systems.
