POKA LAMBRO PICKS MOTOROLA NETWORK

Poka Lambro PCS Inc. has contracted with Motorola Inc. to supply digital equipment valued at $40 million for Poka’s personal communications services networks.

Poka Lambro won licenses to offer PCS service in eight markets through west Texas and eastern New Mexico, covering a population of 1.4 million. The carrier plans to use Code Division Multiple Access technology equipment from Motorola’s Pan American Wireless Infrastructure Division. Installation is scheduled to begin by year’s end. The first networks will be built in Abilene, Big Spring, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa and San Angelo, Texas, as well as Clovis and Hobbs, N.M.

The system will include the SC 604 base station, which Motorola says is the world’s most compact CDMA radio base station. In addition, Motorola will deploy the SC 4850 PCS base station, designed for flexible deployments at 1900 MHz; the high capacity Electronic Mobile Exchange R2500 mobile switch will be used as well.
