Nokia Mobile Phones announced it has teamed with computer manufacturer Psion to enable wireless users to send and receive short messages over a Global System for Mobile communications-based PCS-1900 network using a Nokia PCS phone, Psion’s palmtop computer and Palmtop BV’s Messenger software. Messenger is a message application software that provides a low cost solution for preparing, viewing, editing, storing, sending and receiving short message service messages over PCS-1900 networks that support the service, said Nokia. Psion has designed an intelligent cable that will connect the Nokia 2190 PCS digital phone to the Psion Series 3a palmtop.
Illinois Superconductor Corp. said a U.S. cellular operator has agreed to purchase its SpectrumMaster filter systems. The order is for 12 filters to fully outfit two cell sites in a major metropolitan market using both analog and digital transmission protocols, said Illinois Superconductor. Terms of the transaction, as well as the buyer, were not disclosed.
Tecore announced it has signed a cooperating agreement with AirNet Communications Corp. of Melbourne, Fla. Under the agreement, the companies will bring to market wireless communications systems combining Tecore’s AirCore Wireless Switching Platform with AirNet’s Base Station System. The companies said field tests are underway in Asia and the fully integrated systems are being readied for commercial deployment during the fourth quarter. The AirCore system is a modular switching platform that allows the interconnectivity of wireless networks with the public switched telephone network.
Metrocall Inc. announced it has completed its acquisition of Parkway Paging in Plano, Texas. The total purchase price was about $28 million in cash. Parkway has about 140,000 subscribers throughout Texas.
Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile announced it has concluded its purchase of the Georgia rural service area 2 from Horizon Cellular Communications Inc. The RSA, which is alongside Atlanta and encompasses Barrow and Hall counties, extends the company’s East Coast footprint in time for the 1996 Olympic Games. The Georgia 2 RSA is contiguous with the current Bell Atlantic Nynex service regions of Anderson and Greenville, S.C., and stretches south to suburban Atlanta’s Gwinnett and Walton counties.
Alltel Information Services and BellSouth Information Systems Inc. have expanded their existing relationship for operations and management of billing systems for BellSouth Cellular Corp., BellSouth’s domestic cellular operation. Based on a new five-year agreement, Alltel will work closely with BellSouth Information to provide full-time operational and management services for key components of BellSouth’s cellular customer care system.
