CLEARNET CONTRACTS FOR LUCENT PHONES

PICKERING, Ontario, Canada-Clearnet Communications Inc. has signed a deal with Lucent Technologies Canada to buy pocket phone equipment, valued at $475 million, during the next five years using a loan from Lucent to finance the purchase.

Clearnet plans to roll out its personal communications services network next summer. The company has raised more than $1 billion in financing for its PCS business and will get the loan from Lucent to pay for switches, cell sites and services to build its network.

Clearnet said it plans to sell air time in the high teens and low 20s, compared with the 37 cents to 40 cents per minute charged by cellular carriers.
