BELLSOUTH CELLULAR RECYCLES BATTERIES

ATLANTA-BellSouth Cellular Corp. and Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. have launched a nickel-cadmium battery collection and recycling effort called Charge Up To Recycle.

BSCC said all its retail stores will have collection boxes for cellular phone batteries as well as batteries for video cameras and cordless tools. The stores also will display a recycling kit and collateral material to educate customers.

Nickel-Cadmium batteries are considered hazardous waste, and it is illegal in many states to throw them in the trash or dispose of them as solid waste, said BellSouth.

RBRC will support the program with an advertising campaign featuring Richard Karn, better known as “Al” from the television show “Home Improvement.” National advertisements will include a toll-free number customers can call to find out more about Ni-Cd recycling.
