Grupo Iusacell S.A. de C.V. announced it will resell long-distance service to its more than 225,000 wireless customers during the first phase of the opening of the Mexican long-distance market. Iusacell, through its long-distance subsidiary, Iusatel, will offer discounts which are from 30 percent to 75 percent lower than Telmex rates.

L.M. Ericsson announced it will provide its DCS 1800 system to the Peoples Telephone Co. Ltd. in Hong Kong. The system will provide a wireless network with full coverage for Hong Kong, covering the central area in the initial phase, and subsequently be expanded to the entire territory. The contract, valued at $40 million, includes delivery and installation of switching and radio base station equipment. PTC is one of six operators that was awarded a license in July for a personal communications services network in Hong Kong. PTC is a consortium between China Resources, Unisource Mobile, Telepaging and Mobile Systems International.

Nokia Telecommunications has signed a contract to supply a digital mobile telephone network in Uzbekistan. The agreement between Nokia and Uzmacom includes a Global System for Mobile communications switching center, base stations and technical support services. The network initially will cover Tashkent, the capital city, with a target of 20,000 subscribers during the first two years.

A pilot project testing the Personal Handyphone System in east Java will be launched by a new Indonesian joint venture group. The venture will be called PT Indoprima Mikroselindo, or PT Primasel. It will be held 35 percent by PT Yamabri Komunikasindo, 25 percent by Primkopparpostel, and 20 percent each by PT Industri Telekomunikasi Indonesia and PT Indosat Tbk.

Mobistar S.A., a joint subsidiary of France Telecom Mobiles International and the Belgian company Telinfo, has launched its Global System for Mobile communications cellular telephone network in Belgium. The network covers virtually the entire Belgian population, said Mobistar. The company plans to develop the market by offering competitive service offerings targeted at individuals, businesses and high-volume users.

Motorola Inc.’s Advanced Messaging Group announced an $11 million contract with China’s Jiangsu Posts and Telecommunications Administration for additional FLEX protocol-based M15 paging terminals. The M15 paging terminal includes automatic paging features, integrated voice mail and networking features, said Motorola. The additional paging terminals will add 4 million subscribers to Jiangsu PTA’s existing FLEX protocol-based province-wide paging network. The Jiangsu province, located in the central coastal area next to Shanghai, comprises 11 major cities, said Motorola.
