BUSINESS & FINANCE: ALCATEL, MOTOROLA ENTER WIRELESS MOU WIRELESS TELECOM TO SELL MIDDLE WARE FROM ERICSSON INC.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Alcatel Telecom and Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group will purchase each other’s wireless equipment according to a memorandum of understanding announced Thursday.

According to the agreement, Alcatel will be allowed to purchase and distribute Motorola’s Code Division Multiple Access radio systems, while it provides support for the systems with its mobile switching subsystem as well as transmission equipment. In addition, Motorola will purchase Digital European Cordless Telephone radio subsystems from Alcatel.

WAKEFIELD, Mass.-Boston Technology Inc. announced it has signed a contract to supply its AccessNP and CO ACCESS network services platforms for use in the Univoice Service Bureau, which is jointly owned by Prodigy Inc. and The Greenwich Advisory Ltd.

Univoice Service Bureau will provide value-added services such as call answering and voice and fax messaging, to businesses and individuals in Shanghai, China. Prodigy and The Greenwich Advisory also have contracted with Boston Technology for its Medalist Market Success Program, a comprehensive program of strategic marketing and practical assistance.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-Northern Michigan PCS and Noverr Publishing Inc. announced they have selected Global System for Mobile communications technology for their wireless services. The companies won 11 basic trading areas in Michigan during the personal communications services C-Block auction.

Frank Noverr, president of Noverr, said both companies intend to join GSM North America, a consortium of PCS providers.

Noverr Publishing is involved in the joint ventures of 63 telephone directories, four weekly newspapers and a printing facility. Northern Michigan PCS is a consortium of three independently owned telephone companies in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.-Rural Cellular Corp. announced it has signed an agreement with U S West NewVector Group Inc. to purchase local cellular radio telecommunications service for resale. RCC now will be able to provide cellular service to Minneapolis, Duluth Minn., Arrowhead, Minn., Grand Forks, Fargo and Red River, N.D. RCC said it expects to begin delivering cellular services in these markets in the fourth quarter.

CINCINNATI-ICC International and Cincinnati Microwave Inc. announced DisMIS, a dispatch management system that uses the Cellular Digital Packet Data network and an MC-DART modem to communicate with workers in the field. Features of the system include onboard billing, invoicing and printing, Global Positioning System mapping, inventory management and control, credit card authorization, signature capture and full two-way paging. Dispatchers are able to open, close, review, assign, dispatch or re-route any work order at any time, the company said.

SAN FRANCISCO-Ericsson Inc. announced that Aurora, Colo.-based Wireless Telecom Inc., a wireless products and services distributor, will sell Ericsson’s new EVO middleware through selected value-added resellers.

EVO, which is designed for use with a variety of wireless and wireline communications, enables Microsoft Exchange and gives mobile users wireless access to the same corporate databases, directories, printers and fax servers as in-office workers. EVO eliminates the need for both a wireless and wired mailboxes and includes a “notifier” function that delivers important messages to wireless customers, the company said.
