BOULDER, Colo.-Mobile Systems International Inc., Richardson, Texas, has donated one license of its Planet software to the Interdisciplinary Telecom Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., for educational purposes. Planet is a system design product for wireless networks.
The donation was made in cooperation with TESS LLC, Evergreen, Colo.
The three groups plan to set up a student development program with three goals: to provide ongoing training for professional engineers and technicians in the industry; provide hands-on experience to university students studying telecommunications; and for research purposes.
“It is a chance for the students to see the tools and see what will be out there when they get a job,” said Twilla Skelton, MSI director of human resources.
MSI and TESS plan to target 20 other schools around the country to start similar programs and will look to other industry vendors to donate resources. CU is a test school for the program.
“We would like to see some other people get involved, not just us. It would be nice to have some hardware donations too,” said Darren Dattalo, MSI marketing manager. He added,”We are doing this first project hoping it will lead to many others.”
Stephan Andrade, chief operating officer of TESS, said there is a shortage of radio frequency engineers and this effort aims to mitigate the industry costs of the personnel shortage and the expense of hiring qualified people.
