AML RELEASES POWERFUL NEW 140-WATT AMPLIFIER

AML Communications Inc. has introduced what is says is the highest power multicarrier amplifier available to the cellular industry.

The amplifier operates at 140 watts, compared to the 100 watts other manufacturers may offer, the company said. AML designs and manufactures amplifiers, repeaters and related products in Camarillo, Calif.

AML sees two distinct uses for the 140-watt amplifier. First, it can be used in the microcell environment, said Ed McAvoy, AML vice president of sales. “You can take microcell equipment and install it in an urban environment, but attach it to the M-140,” McAvoy said.

“It will start to behave like a macrocell with high transmit power and wide coverage area. And if you take three microcells and boost with our amplifiers, you have a three-sector cell.”

The second possible use addresses the cellular industry’s evolution to adaptive frequency control.

“In the next 12 months, and certainly in 24 months, we’ll see the industry move on this, and cell sites will no longer have fixed frequencies. Frequency will be allocated depending on the capacity that cell needs,” he said.

And for that to happen, multichannel cavity combiners will have to be tuned unless you use a multicarrier amplifier like the M-140, he said.

“Carriers can replace all the single-channel amplifiers and cavity combiners and put in the multicarrier amplifier,” he said.

The M-140 multicarrier cellular amplifier is an upgrade of the M-80 product, which the company has been shipping for several years, AML noted.
