Metawave Communications Corp. appointed Kathryn Surace-Smith general counsel for the company. She will provide legal support for Metawave’s business development activities including customer contracts, licensing agreements, strategic partnerships and financial, operational and corporate matters. Previously, Surace-Smith was international counsel for Alcatel Telecom.

Glenayre Technologies Inc. named Gary Smith president and chief operating officer of the company. Smith has been with Glenayre for 14 years and has held positions including president of the company’s Wireless Messaging Group. “We are very fortunate to have Gary, with his experience and understanding of the wireless industry, along with his vision and strategic focus, assume responsibility for the top executive position within Glenayre,” said Ray Ardizzone, Glenayre’s chairman of the board.

Alan Z. Senter is a new outside director of Advanced Radio Telecom Corp. Senter is the former executive vice president and chief financial officer of Nynex Corp. and vice president of finance for Xerox. “Alan Senter brings valuable insights and a unique understanding of the challenges facing rapid growth companies in the competitive, ever-changing telecommunications and high-tech marketplaces gained through his substantial experience at Nynex and Xerox,” said Vernon Fotheringham, chairman and chief executive officer of Advanced Radio.

Paging Network Inc. named Steven Cadwell vice president of national accounts to lead its National Accounts Direct division. Prior to joining the company, Cadwell served in various sales and marketing positions with GTE Telephone Operations, including national manager of wireless operations. The company also named Cathy S. Pringle vice president of marketing for paging products and services. She will be responsible for marketing strategies to promote growth in PageNet’s core paging business. Most recently, Pringle served as director of marketing for the printing and publishing division of Jostens.

Alltel Corp. appointed Dave Atkins to head its personal communications services deployment team for the licenses it expects to secure in the D- and E-block auctions. Atkins most recently was vice president and general manager of Alltel Mobile’s Carolinas market. Other members of the team include Clyde Smith and Roy Crawford in technology and network planning; Jim Ruth and Mike Lamb in marketing and business development; David Gatewood in corporate accounting and finance; and Frank O’Mara in legal and administration.

Roger Diamond was promoted to vice president and Eastern area sales manager for Electronic Products Inc. Diamond joined the company in 1995 and most recently was territory manager. In his new position, he will be responsible for developing a marketing team to increase sales in Michigan, Indiana and Kentucky. Milwaukee-based Electronic Products Inc. provides sales representation in the upper Midwestern states for several infrastructure, test equipment and mobile accessory manufacturers.

Sprint PCS named Michael Cusick director of sales for the company’s Pittsburgh region. Previously, Cusick held positions including national account manager, regional manager of corporate accounts and indirect sales manager with AT&T Wireless Services Inc. He also was corporate account executive and sales manager for Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile. In addition, the company named Stephen Wayhart director of marketing for the Pittsburgh region. Wayhart previously was vice president of marketing for The Italian Oven Inc. restaurant chain, and marketing manager for McDonald’s Corp.

CellStar Corp. promoted Richard M. Gozia to the positions of president and chief operating officer. He had served as the company’s chief financial officer and executive vice president of administration since June 1996. The company also appointed Mark Q. Huggins chief financial officer. Prior to joining the company, Huggins was CFO at Van Camp Seafood Company Inc., where he was responsible for accounting, finance, tax, treasury, internal audit and management information systems.

Franklin P. Antonio is the new executive vice president and chief technology officer of Qualcomm Inc. Antonio was one of the founders of Qualcomm and served as vice president of engineering from 1985 until 1990, and senior vice president of engineering since 1992. Qualcomm said Antonio has led the growth of Qualcomm’s engineering department and has contributed to technology innovations including Code Division Multiple Access technology and the Globalstar low-earth-orbit satellite system. In his new position, Antonio will provide strategic technical guidance and active engineering mentoring in all of Qualcomm’s engineering programs.

Nokia Corp. named Lauri Kivinen senior vice president of corporate communications for the Nokia Group, with responsibility for corporate communications and media relations. He will succeed Seppo Harkonen who was appointed president of Finland’s Trade Promotion Organization, the Finnish foreign trade association. Kivinen has been with Nokia since 1988 and most recently was vice president of communications at Nokia Mobile Phones.

Multiple Zones International Inc. appointed John DeFeo chief executive officer, president, chief operating officer and vice chairman of the board of directors. DeFeo held the positions of president and CEO at both U.S. Airwaves Inc. and U S West New Vector Group. He has served on the Multiple Zones’ board since April.
