POPULOUS TAKES REGULAR BATTERIES

NEW YORK-Motorola Inc. has introduced “Populous,” a new cellular phone that runs interchangeably on disposable alkaline batteries, rechargeable nickel cadmium or nickel metal hydride batteries.

The Populous weighs about 8.2 ounces with the NiCad battery pack.

The use of four AA alkaline batteries will provide Populous purchasers up to 180 minutes of talk time or 30 hours of standby time, according to Motorola’s Cellular Subscriber Sector, Libertyville, Ill. As an option, Populous users can purchase a “Fast Transformer Charger,” which will recharge the NiCad batteries in one-and-a-half hours, Motorola said.
