WASHINGTON-Mitsubishi Wireless Communications Inc. will provide Pocket Communications Inc. with personal communications services handsets. Pocket values the two-year agreement at $129 million.
A custom version of Mitsubishi Wireless’ first Global System for Mobile communications phone will be made available exclusively to Pocket, the companies said. The phones will be delivered during the third quarter.
Pocket and Mitsubishi have spent the last year collaborating on the handset. Features of the phone include simulated dial tone, automatic font reduction and enhanced talk and standby times.
“Our goal from the beginning has been to offer the mass market consumer a completely different kind of wireless service and that begins with the phone,” said Daniel Riker, chairman and chief executive officer of Pocket. “Mitsubishi was extremely creative and flexible in working with Pocket to design a phone that meets the needs of the mass market in terms of ergonomics and applications.”
Mitsubishi Wireless’ parent company, Mitsubishi Corp., made an undisclosed investment in Pocket as part of the agreement.
