RIGA, Latvia-Baltel Ltd., the second national mobile operator in Latvia, launched its Global System for Mobile communications network with switching, radio, transmission and microwave equipment provided by Northern Telecom Ltd.
The network serves Latvia’s capital city of Riga and its suburbs. Baltel will expand the network to cover the region of Riga and key highways, the company said.
Baltel is majority owned by Alina, a paging and wireless cable television operator in Latvia. Other shareholders are Metromedia International Telecommunications, Western Wireless International and The Walter Group.
Baltel won its license to operate Latvia’s second GSM network in March 1996.
