Siemens Wireless Terminals, a unit of Siemens Business Communication Systems Inc., will supply Global System for Mobile communications handsets to Western Wireless Corp. Siemens values the contract at $35 million.
Siemens g1050 handset and accessory products will be available in June to customers of Western Wireless’ personal communications services network branded VoiceStream. The service is available in Albuquerque, N.M./El Paso, Texas, Des Moines/Quad Cities, Iowa, Honolulu, Oklahoma City, Portland, Ore., and Salt Lake City.
The handset supports a four-line, 16-character display with enhanced full-rate vocoder and a full-size subscriber identity module.
Robert Hunsberger, senior vice president and general manager of Siemens Wireless Terminals said, “This contract expands our product footprint to the western United States.”
Headquartered in Issaquah, Wash., Western Wireless also offers cellular service under the Cellular One brand name in 15 western states. The company said its combined networks cover about 63 million people.
