WIRELESS LOCAL LOOP TOUTED BY ANALYSTS

OYSTER BAY, N.Y.-Wireless local loop technology could be the key to bringing telephone service to regions where landline service is unreliable or nonexistent, said Allied Business Intelligence in its Wireless World Strategic Outlook: 1997 report.

WLL can be used to provide service in mountainous regions or island outposts as well as urban areas where installation of major wire conduits is impractical, ABI added.

The company predicts subscriber growth will rise at an average rate of 42 percent per year through 2005. The initial growth will mainly come from economically advanced areas, but growth in less-developed regions will dominate once WLL technology is adopted. Underdeveloped countries will account for nearly 75 percent of all WLL subscribers by 2005, ABI said.
