ROMANIAN VENTURE LAUNCHES SERVICE

SAN FRANCISCO-MobiFon, the Romanian cellular venture of Telesystem International Wireless of Canada and AirTouch Communications Inc., launched commercial service less than five months after receiving a license.

The network uses Global System for Mobile communications technology. Service is available in Bucharest and eight major cities, the companies said, and is expected to reach most of the country’s 23 million people by the end of the year. MobiFon won its GSM license from the Romanian government in November.

Telesystem International, with a 60 percent stake in MobiFon, is responsible for the company’s sales, marketing, finance and administration. AirTouch, with a 10 percent interest, serves as a technical partner with responsibility for network design and operation. MobiFon operates under the brand name Connex GSM.
