RCR TOP 20 CELLULAR CARRIERS

Editor’s Note: The companies listed below represent the 20 largest cellular carriers in the United States. Company rankings are based on the total number of subscribers for their majority-held or controlled markets. All subscriber numbers reflect year-end 1996 figures reported by each company.

AirTouch Communications Inc. has acquired Cellular Communications Inc. The two companies equally owned New Par, which operated in Michigan and Ohio. The AirTouch subscriber count includes New Par.

AirTouch also expects to gain ownership of U S West NewVector Group Inc. cellular properties by year end. U S West Media Group and AirTouch have signed a letter of intent that allows AirTouch to gain total ownership of Media Group’s domestic cellular properties.

Horizon Cellular Group has sold all of its cellular properties. AllTel Corp. has combined its cellular business AllTel Mobile Communications Inc. and landline business AllTel Telephone Services Corp. to form AllTel Communications.
