Metawave Communications Corp. named Tom Crawford director of product marketing and business development. He will be responsible for maintaining strategic partnerships that provide new sales and marketing opportunities for Metawave’s multibeam antenna systems. Prior to joining the company, Crawford was director of strategic accounts for Qualcomm Inc., where he was responsible for negotiating agreements and maintaining relationships with major wireless carriers and manufacturers.

RadioLan named four new vice presidents. Reza Majidi-Ahy was promoted to vice president of engineering. He joined the company in 1995 from Varian, where he was manager of engineering for wireless, radio frequency and optoelectronic products. Mark Bosse was promoted to vice president of marketing. He came to RadioLan in 1995 from Whittaker Communications, formerly Hughes LAN Systems. At Whittaker he was vice president of marketing for the company’s ATM and Ethernet switching products. Robert Hernandez was promoted to vice president of operations. He joined the company in 1994 from Network Appliance Corp., where he was director of materials. Michael Laugesen joined RadioLan as vice president of international sales. Laugesen had held the same position from August 1994 to September 1995. He rejoins the company after spending 18 months as a consultant.

Cable & Wireless plc appointed John Baits director of technology. He will be responsible for technology planning, network architecture, product and service development, information systems and strategic supplies management. Baits held several positions with IBM Corp. including director of IBM’s U.K. Laboratory and general manager of OEM products.

Joseph Gifford was appointed executive vice president of business development for InterDigital Communications Corp. He will be responsible for opening new global markets for current and future product lines, the company said. Gifford joins the company from Motorola Inc., where he was responsible for business development and marketing in the Wireless Access Systems Division.

Ellen Craig is the new vice president of regulatory affairs for USN Communications. Craig has served as a consultant to investment banking and telecommunications companies on domestic and international telecommunications issues since 1994. Before that she was chairman and commissioner of the Illinois Commerce Commission.

John Vaughan was named executive vice president of Tellabs Inc. and president of Tellabs International Inc. He will be responsible for development, manufacturing, marketing and support functions for Tellabs’ customers outside the United States and Canada. Most recently, Vaughan was corporate vice president of business development and strategy for Ameritech Corp. where he worked closely with the regional Bell operating company’s 15 business units to pursue growth and expansion activities.

CellularVision USA announced Bruce Judson is the company’s new chief marketing officer and a member of the Office of the Chairman. He will be responsible for marketing efforts to maintain the company’s role in the Local Multipoint Distribution Service market, the company said. His initial focus will be on the roll out of the company’s high-speed data services. Previously, Judson was general manager at Time Inc., New Media, where he played a key role in building Time Warner’s Internet-related initiatives.

Alan Hurd is the new direct sales manager for Powertel Inc.’s Columbus and Macon markets in the Atlanta major trading area. He will be responsible for managing sales operations in the area, which includes West Point, Warner, Robins, Opelika, LaGrange, Auburn and Phoenix City. Most recently, Hurd was sales manager for A+ Network/Metrocall Inc. where he headed a staff of 25 outside sales, service and management employees.

Uniden America Corp. promoted Karen Murphy to vice president of the marine products division where she will oversee sales and assist in new product planning for all of Uniden’s marine products. Murphy has been with the company since 1988 when she was sales operations manager for Regency Electronics consumer division, which was acquired by Uniden. She became regional manager for the marine products division until 1995, when she took over as director of sales.
