KIRKLAND, Wash.-AT&T Wireless Services Inc. introduced Digital PCS service at 1900 MHz in the metropolitan areas surrounding Philadelphia, Washington, D.C./Baltimore and Charlotte, N.C.
The carrier is offering Ericsson Inc.’s dual-band dual-mode handsets LX 100 and LX 77. Dual-mode handset users can travel between digital wireless systems and conventional analog cellular systems.
Customers can place and receive calls in more than 3,000 cities across the United States and Canada and access the full range of Digital PCS features whenever they are in an AT&T Digital PCS market.
This week’s introduction is part of the company’s continuing nationwide rollout of AT&T Digital PCS. The licenses for these new markets are among the 21 broadband personal communications services licenses acquired by the company. AT&T Wireless already has introduced 1900 MHz service in Chicago, Atlanta and Phoenix, and expects to launch at least four more markets before the end of the year.
In addition to the handsets, Ericsson provided the network infrastructure for AT&T Wireless’ three recently launched markets, which use Interim Standard 136 Time Division Multiple Access technology.
The infrastructure includes mobile switching centers, RBS 884 Macro base stations and enhanced full-rate vocoders, AT&T said.
