SAN ANTONIO-SBC Communications Inc. reported a net income of $816 million, or 89 cents per share, for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with $867 million, or 94 cents per share, reported a year ago.
The company said earnings were affected by an increase in expenses associated with meeting the demands for personal communications services operations in California and Nevada.
Earnings would have been higher, but special charges totaling $43 million were incurred related to merger integration initiatives and local number portability costs, SBC said.
