KANAGAWA, Japan-Lucent Technologies Inc. said it is establishing a Bell Laboratories presence in Japan at the Yokosuka Research Park to develop and test a prototype Wideband Code Division Multiple Access system for third-generation wireless communications systems.
Lucent said its presence in Japan complements its ongoing research and development activities already taking place at its U.S.-based Product Realization Center in Mt. Olive, N.J. Lucent’s PRC focuses on design, development and manufacturing of CDMA minicells for the global market. Lucent in one of the manufacturers chosen by NTT DoCoMo to work with it to develop third-generation systems.
At Yokosuka, which is located about 30 miles southwest of Tokyo, Lucent plans to work closely with customers to create W-CDMA systems and reduce time to commercial development. NTT DoCoMo has a facility in Yokosuka where research and development for its core next-generation digital mobile communications systems and services will take place.
