PARIS-Sony Corp. joined the UMTS Alliance in support of its proposed next generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications System wireless standard, which combines key elements of Time Division Multiple Access and Code Division Multiple Access technologies, said the company.
To date, the alliance is comprised of Alcatel, Bosch, Italtel, Motorola Inc., Northern Telecom Ltd. and Siemens AG.
The Global System for Mobile communications manufacturers will work toward the development of the standard for UMTS based on the TD-CDMA concept proposed earlier this year by Siemens to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, said the alliance.
The standard uses CDMA signal spreading techniques to enhance the capacity offered by conventional TDMA technology, said the companies. Each time slot of the TDMA channel would be individually coded using CDMA technology.
