SCHAUMBURG, Ill.-Korea TRS, Korea Telecom’s specialized mobile radio service company, plans to launch the first phase of its nationwide digital wireless service in Seoul and Pusan, using Motorola Inc.’s integrated Digital Enhanced Network technology, Motorola announced.

Motorola’s iDEN technology combines two-way radio, a mobile telephone, alphanumeric messaging and data capabilities into a single pocket-sized handset. Korea TRS initially will use the new system, implemented by LG Electronics Inc., for radio dispatch applications in the transportation industry and mobile work groups requiring rapid communication, said Motorola.

Korea TRS (trunked radio service) expects to sign up 40,000 subscribers during its first full year of operation. The Seoul-based company has installed 19 cell sites in Seoul and Kyungi and 11 cell sites in Pusan and Kyungnam, and expects to have about 150 cell sites in operation by 2000.

In addition to Korea, iDEN systems also are operating or being built in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Israel, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore and the United States, said Motorola.
