MICROCELL FORMS GSM DEVELOP MENT UNIT

NEW YORK-Microcell Capital Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Microcell Telecommunications Inc., said it created GSM Capital L.P., an international venture-capital fund with more than $137 million committed to private-equity investment in companies developing new Global System for Mobile communications products and services.

GSM Capital pools resources from nine GSM operators across Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia, including 15 institutional investors.

Other participating GSM operators include Aerial Communications Inc. and Omnipoint Communications Inc. of the United States; Celcom of Malaysia; Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, through its subsidiary T-Venture; ESAT Digifone of Ireland; Smartone of Hong Kong; Singapore Telecom; and France Telecom Group, through its subsidiary, Innovacom. As the founding partner, Microcell Capital said it has committed $15 million to the fund.
