Harris Corp. announced a handheld ISDN test set that allows installation and maintenance technicians to verify ISDN service operation without having to interpret ISDN protocols. Hark Systems announced two innovations to its TAP 2000 product line that allow for longer pager identifications, up to 16 digits, and a chaining paging feature. The TAP 2000 allows up to 24 alphanumeric paging inputs to use a single high-speed computer port in the paging terminal. The paging industry has begun using longer pager identifications, said Hark, hence the increase. Also, the chaining receipt of messages up to 4,000 characters. Hewlett-Packard Co. announced the latest addition to its family of functional-test systems for electronic devices. The new HP TS-5500 tester, designed for testing Code Division Multiple Access-and Global System for Mobile communications-based cellular phones, is an integrated, open-standards-based platform that provides a head start for building systems, said HP. For CDMA phone manufacturers under pressure to get to market quickly and to increase volumes, the HP TS-5500’s high level of integration reduces test-development time by up to one-half that of existing systems. For GSM phone manufacturers facing a more cost-competitive environment, the platform’s architecture reduces the overall test cost per phone by up to 35 percent, said the company. Hirschmann introduced a dual-band, on-glass antenna designed to function with the dual-band, multimode phones offered by personal communications services carriers. Designed to yield to nominal 3 dB of gain and operate in a frequency range of 805 MHz to 896 MHz, and 2 dB gain in the 1850 MHz to 1975 MHz frequency range, the ON-2d/b antenna may be employed with any Advanced Mobile Phone Service or PCS-based phone, regardless of the digital protocol, said Hirschmann. The option has been approved by Inmarsat, the company said, and also is available for retrofit to existing units. The MX 6060 satellite terminal provides digital telephone, fax and data communications through the Inmarsat satellite network. According to the company, the data option will permit users to send and receive data from remote locations through the satellite system’s voice channels at a lower per-minute cost than the dedicated 64,000 bits per second satellite high-speed data channels.
