DALLAS-Ivory Coast’s Telecel International has deployed its Global System for Mobile communications network using cellular infrastructure from Celcore, a division of DSC Communications Corp., said DSC.
Telecel International, based in New Canaan, Conn., operates and manages cellular systems throughout Africa, including Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Zambia and Madagascar. Most recently, it received a GSM license in Zimbabwe.
“DSC has revolutionized how GSM systems can be deployed in small- to medium-sized markets with its unique combination of innovative technology and lower start-up costs, which is ideally suited to the African marketplace,” said Justin Dudley, vice president-network engineering at Telecel.
The DSC system-designed for urban, suburban and rural markets with low-subscriber density-comprises the GlobalSwitch, GlobalCell base station and Network Management System, said DSC. The GlobalSwitch is scalable to support populations from a few hundred subscribers up to 10,000 subscribers, according to the company. Multiple switches can be networked to provide greater capacity for a larger network.
