The new GSM licensee in Israel, Partner Communications Co., signed a letter of intent with L.M. Ericsson for the supply of equipment for the operator, a joint venture between Hutchison Telecommunications, Matav Cable Systems Media and Elbit, reported The Financial Times. The newspaper quoted the deal as valued at US$82 million.
Denmark’s Sonofon has selected Nokia Oy as its sole supplier for Sonofon’s GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) 1800 network, announced Nokia. The vendor said it will supply the carrier with base stations, as well as network management and customer-service solutions. Sonofon also signed a frame agreement with Nokia covering GSM 900 switching capability.
Lucent Technologies Inc. signed a US$30 million contract with Telecel of Portugal to provide wireless systems and installation services for the carrier’s GSM network. Telecel is majority-owned by U.S.-based AirTouch Communications Inc.
Montreal, Canada-based SR Telecom Inc. has signed a US$42 million contract with the Municipal Telecommunications Project Office in the Philippines for the engineering and supply of rural telephone networks primarily in the southern region of the country. The contract is for SRT’s SR500-s wireless TDMA (time division multiple access) microwave systems.
Dolphin Telecommunications, formerly TetraLink Telecommunications Ltd., announced its intention to award Nokia Oy a contract to provide network infrastructure for Dolphin’s TETRA-based trunked-radio network in the United Kingdom, said Nokia.
L.M. Ericsson has received a contract from the Peoples Telephone Co. Ltd. of Hong Kong to expand the carrier’s GSM 1800 network. Initially, the agreement covers a US$32 million expansion of the carrier’s existing network. Peoples Telephone is owned by China Resources, Telia of Sweden, PTT Telecom Netherlands, MSI of the United Kingdom and Telepaging of Hong Kong.
Motorola Inc.’s Paging Systems Group has received a contract from the oldest paging service provider in Latin America, Alfa-Bip of Mexico, to provide infrastructure for the carrier’s nationwide expansion, Motorola said. Under the agreement, Alfa-Bip will purchase Nucleus one-way transmitters from Motorola, which the company will use to launch nationwide service.
