Wireless fax machine

Possio International, based in Sweden, introduced the PM80, a wireless, briefcase-portable terminal for transmitting and receiving fax messages. The device connects to a mobile phone with either infrared light or a PC card. The portable fax machine will be upgradable to access the Internet and print Web pages and e-mail messages.

Small wireless switch

Northern Telecom Inc. introduced its Small Wireless Switch, designed to provide wireless operators and telephone companies an economical solution for building out existing networks and providing telephone service in remote, rural or low-population areas. The compact mobile and fixed wireless digital switching system offers service for as few as 50 subscribers or as many as 10,000. It provides both digital and analog wireless service.

FLEX pager

Philips Consumer Communications introduced its fourth FLEX-protocol pager, Kalani. The four-line alphanumeric unit has a zoom feature that allows the user to increase the font size from four lines of smaller type to two lines of larger type, and the display has a contrast control for easy reading. It has memory capacity for up to 99 personal messages, with a maximum length of up to 6400 characters.

Link server software

Fujitsu Software Corp. announced the availability of ByeDesk Link, software that lets digital mobile-phone users have Internet and intranet access, send and receive e-mail messages up to two kilobytes, share group calendars, search directories and receive push technology notifications without a laptop computer. ByeDesk Link operates on Sun Solaris and Windows NT.

Base station

Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group introduced a new GSM base station called M-Cell access that is designed to provide coverage inside buildings. The company also introduced a two-carrier microcellular base station called M-Cell arena that is designed to provide coverage in areas of high subscriber demand.

Software for smartphones

STNC Enterprises Ltd., a company based in England that provides Internet software for mobile devices, launched its new HitchHiker smartphone platform. The software allows any phone to become a smartphone, with access to value-added services such as up-to-date travel information and the Web. With HitchHiker, consumers can just subscribe to a new service and have their phone’s functions extended instead of having to buy a new phone. It supports GSM, PCS, CDMA and third-generation protocols.

Base station

Samsung Telecommunications America unveiled its new compact CDMA base station designed to reduce initial deployment and recurring network costs. Samsung’s Pico base station provides cellular and PCS operators with a small high-capacity platform allowing for deployment flexibility. PicoBTS’ architecture, based on a modular design, is composed of the main unit and the radio unit. The main unit houses fully redundant controllers, a global positioning system receiver and CDMA channel elements. The radio unit supports diversity receive and radiates a standard 5 watts of output power.

SIM card

Schlumberger announced the availability of its dual-mode, dual-band SIM card for AMPS and PCS 800 MHz or 1900 MHz networks. When the card is inserted into a compatible mobile handset, the SIM enables PCS subscribers in North America to communicate anywhere there is a PCS 1900, GSM or AMPS network.

Hewlett-Packard

TDMA test set

Hewlett-Packard Co. introduced a test set that uses TDMA technology to test cellular and PCS base stations. The company already has a CDMA version and currently is working on a GSM version. The HP 8935 TDMA PCS/cellular base station test set was developed specifically for network equipment manufacturers and technicians responsible for the ongoing maintenance of base stations. The test set has frequency coverage to 1 GHz and from 1.7 GHz to 2 GHz for PCS coverage. The HP 8935 measures frequency error, TDMA true average power and modulation quality.

Allen Telecom Systems Division introduced the SmartCell D-AMPS, a digital wireless telephony network solution for remote regions or small- to medium-sized cities. SmartCell D-AMPS is designed to provide faster deployment and lower subscriber costs than traditional infrastructure equipment, and to provide greater flexibility in extending coverage to rural areas.
