PERU
Comsat International said it received a license to provide voice, data and multimedia wireless communications services for businesses operating in Lima, Peru. Using both fiber-optic cable and microwave technologies, Comsat Peru plans to build a local digital network in Lima, where 80 percent of the large domestic and multinational corporations operating in Peru are located, said the company. Comsat Peru plans to interconnect with other carriers to extend its customers’ networks domestically and internationally.
RUSSIA
Millicom International Cellular S.A. announced it launched commercial cellular service in the Russian regions of Kuzbass, Kursk and the Republic of Udmurtiya. The operation in Kuzbass, Kemerova Mobile Telecommunications, is managed and 55-percent owned by Millicom. Service was launched in the region’s two largest cities-the capital city, Kemerova, and Novokuznetsk. The company plans to increase capacity and coverage of the network throughout the year to include the cities of Leninsk-Kuznetsk and Belvo, said Millicom. Kemerova’s licensed coverage area has 3.1 million pops. Millicom owns 95 percent of the Kursk operation, which is licensed to cover an area of 1.4 million pops.
POLAND
Omnipoint Communications launched its second roaming deal in Poland with Polkomtel SA, bringing its total number of international roaming agreements to 39, said the company. The personal communications services provider’s other partnership in Poland is with Polska Telefonia.
Portugal
Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group announced it received a contract from Main Road Telecomunicacoes, valued at more than $50 million, to supply Portugal’s first multiband Global System for Mobile communications cellular network. The network for the country’s new mobile phone operator will operate on GSM 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequencies in the most densely populated areas. GSM 900 coverage will be available throughout the rest of the country.
