NETRO SOLUTION PROVIDES LAST-MILE CONNECTIVITY

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-Netro Corp. introduced AirStar LM, an advanced fixed wireless broadband solution designed to provide competitive local exchange carriers and telecommunication service providers with last-mile access, said Netro.

AirStar’s point-to-multipoint asynchronous transfer mode architecture provides high-speed access over local multipoint distribution service networks serving multidwelling units and small- to medium-sized businesses. The solution is intended to give CLECs in metropolitan areas another option besides leasing copper or fiber lines from the local provider.

AirStar “enables service provi-ders with spectrum between 10 GHz and 38 GHz to create high-bandwidth infrastructures without waiting for resolution of xDSL copper unbundling regulations or the upgrade of hybrid-fiber-coax networks,” said Netro’s Chief Executive Officer and President Gideon Ben-Efraim.

AirStar consists of a base station with integrated radio/antenna units plus a range of application-specific subscriber terminal equipment. Using sectored antennas, AirStar’s base station radio unit transmits and receives to a subscriber radio unit that is connected to a small subscriber access system. Each base station can support up to 24 sectors.

The infrastructure system offers CLECs and telecom service providers auto installation options for plug-and-play subscriber installation, a scalable and modular architecture as well as broad market coverage, with one base station typically covering a two- to four-mile radius, Netro said.
