GROUPE SAGEM LICENSES UP.BROWSER

HANNOVER, Germany-Groupe Sagem licensed Unwired Planet Inc.’s UP.Browser to provide Internet access for its wireless handsets.

Sagem is a French group of high-technology companies employing about 14,000 people. Sagem’s Mobile Communication business manufactured 1 million units in 1997 and expects to triple that number this year, the organization said.

Unwired Planet’s products support the Global System for Mobile communications, Code Division Multiple Access, Cellular Digital Packet Data, Personal Handyphone System, Personal Digital Cellular and Time Division Multiple Access wireless communications standards.

Unwired Planet is a co-founder of the Wireless Application Protocol Forum, an initiative aimed at the convergence of mobile communication devices and the Internet. The company’s microbrowser gives mobile users access to Web-based information, such as e-mail, financial services, news updates, entertainment listings, directories and electronic-commerce applications.
