CENTURY REVENUES UP, LOSS DEEPENS

Century Communications Corp. reported an increase in revenue and a greater net loss for its third quarter, ended Feb. 28, compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Third-quarter revenue grew 16.9 percent, from $161 million in 1997 to $188 million this year. Total revenue for the nine-month period just ended was $560.2 million, an increase of 18.4 percent compared with $473 million reported for the corresponding nine-month period of 1997.

Revenue from the company’s consolidated investment in Centennial Cellular Corp.’s wireless operations for the recent quarter was $59.2 million, a 51.1-percent increase compared with the same three months of 1997. The cellular division’s total revenue for the nine-month period was $171.2 million, a 60-percent increase compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.

The company’s third-quarter net loss grew by 24.6 percent, from $23.4 million, or 33 cents per share, in 1997, to $29.1 million, or 41 cents per share, this year. The company reduced its net loss for the nine-month period by 4.5 percent, from $101.8 million, or $1.42 per share in 1997, to $97.3 million, or $1.35 per share, for the nine months ended in 1998.
