SOMEONE STOLE SMR FREQUENCIES

To the Editor:

Regarding your opinion article on April 13, (It’s time for small businesses to be creative) great insight; however, in order for the small operators to succeed we need more than money, brains and marketing skills. We need frequencies!

But guess what? Someone stole them. Federal Communications Commission officials told me not to worry-we can participate in the auctions. Guess what-my marketing areas reside in the Chicago economic area. No problem, I don’t see why a small, five-person company can’t construct a trunking system 100 miles away in order to market to our 40-mile radius. It should only cost $100 million or so.

The original specialized mobile radio rules were very well thought out. You couldn’t even apply for more channels until you were loaded. Very few speculators could construct, much less operate and load a trunked system.

I know most small operators can run circles around the competition, but you can’t win a race when they cut off your legs and arms.
