American Mobile Satellite Corp. announced it has signed a three-year contract extension with IBM Corp. to provide the computer company with wireless data network services over its Ardis network through 2001. IBM uses the Ardis network for its field-service support personnel using a national dispatch application. IBM recently developed the application for the Research in Motion Inter@ctive pager that facilitates communications between the company’s dispatch system and field technicians.
Brightpoint Inc. said it completed the previously announced acquisition of the business and various net assets of Taiwan-based Function Communications Co. Ltd., which provides distribution and value-added logistics services to the wireless industry.
NEC America Inc.’s Wireless Marketing Division announced its Beacon Data Pager will be sold in CompUSA retail stores beginning this month. The Beacon pager is a wireless personal digital assistant that can download data from a desktop or laptop computer via an infrared technology port. It also uses FLEX technology, so it has full alphanumeric messaging ability.
ADC Wireless Systems Group will use Sigma switches and the Virtual Central Office series from Summa Four according to an agreement between the two companies. ADC plans to use the Summa Four products in two systems it is developing for wireless local loop and lawful-intercept-deliver applications, the companies said.
TekNow Inc. announced it will provide paging terminals to Clariti Telecommunications for an FM-band Digital Voice Paging System, under an agreement the two signed. The ClariCAST Digital Voice Paging System will be marketed in areas of Latin America and Asia, the company said. The technology uses FM subcarrier frequencies and can be installed in any city where FM radio towers exist.
SunCap Management Group Inc. recently acquired Absolute Best Monitoring, an alphanumeric paging dispatch company located in Brick, N.J., and changed the company’s name to X Act Message. Voicemail and two pager reminder services were added to the X Act product line.
