PAGENET HIRES MARKETING VP

Paging Network Inc. announced it has recently chosen Lynn Bace to fill the company’s vacant senior vice president of marketing position, effective Aug. 31.

Bace has 22 years of management experience, most recently as vice president and general manager of a division of Kraft Foods Inc., where she oversaw its marketing efforts. She formerly was vice president of strategy there as well. Her previous marketing experience included stints as group vice president for marketing and strategy at Griffith Labs, vice president of marketing for Pepsico Inc.’s KFC Inc. and director of marketing for Frito-Lay Inc.

The marketing position has been a big question mark at PageNet since last August, when Leigh Alexander-former senior vice president of marketing and strategic planning-left the company. That announcement came amid an upper-management shakeup.

An ineffective marketing strategy was widely blamed for PageNet’s disappointing rollout of the VoiceNow voice paging service based on Motorola Inc.’s InFLEXion technology. Despite spending some $400 million on the service and a six-month head start as the exclusive InFLEXion service provider in North America, PageNet was unable to roll out the service in 30 markets like it planned and only signed up some 2,600 subscribers by last summer.

PageNet said it expects to begin service in Chicago by the end of the second quarter.
