TURKEY AWARDS LARGEST GSM CONTRACT TO MOTOROLA

ISTANBUL-Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group announced what it called the world’s single-largest Global System for Mobile communications infrastructure contract to date.

The company signed an exclusive $500 million contract with Telsim, a GSM operator in Turkey, to enhance the carrier’s network countrywide. Motorola said it plans to deploy its new Extended Range Cell feature that enlarges the reach of GSM cells. Trials with Spanish GSM operator Telefonica Moviles showed the range of a GSM cell can be increased up to 75 miles, 53 more miles than the traditional GSM cell range, said Motorola.

The Extended Range Cell feature specifically is designed to provide coverage in flat rural areas where population densities are low and where installation of additional cell sites is not economically viable, said Motorola.

The contract with Telsim calls for the two to partner in installing and commissioning the GSM infrastructure. Within the scope of the agreement, Telsim expects that other Motorola developments and enabling communication technologies also will be introduced into the Turkish market as they emerge from other Motorola business groups and sectors.
