CHICAGO-United States Cellular Corp. announced plans to acquire from GTE Wireless Inc. the controlling interest in the partnership that manages the cellular licenses serving the Jacksonville and Wilmington, N.C., areas for an undisclosed amount.
Earlier this year, U.S. Cellular agreed to pay $30 million in cash to Vanguard Cellular Systems Inc. and assume any outstanding debt to acquire its interest. U.S. Cellular will own about 95 percent of the cellular licenses in the two metropolitan statistical areas, representing approximately 338,000 pops.
