GTE, SIERRA ANNOUNCE CDPD SOLUTION

VANCOUVER, B.C.-GTE Wireless and Sierra Wireless Corp. announced their combined circuit switched cellular digital packet data solution now is commercially available, the first end user being the Indiana State Police.

The CS-CDPD solution makes use of Sierra Wireless’ MP215 modem, the first modem to retain packet data connection seamlessly between circuit switched cellular networks to CDPD networks. GTE Wireless is the first network provider for the solution.

The solution allows users to maintain data connections in areas where CDPD coverage is not available-such as rural areas or metropolitan regions like Atlanta-by automatically switching over to a cellular network. The modem senses when it is leaving standard CDPD coverage and converts to circuit switched mode, requiring no action by the user.
