RALEIGH, N.C.-The 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games announced Platinum sponsor Ericsson Inc. will supply mobile phones, two-way radios and telephone handsets for the Games.
The ’99 Games, June 26 to July 4, will bring nearly 7,000 athletes from 150 countries to North Carolina’s Triangle area of Raleigh-Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill, said Ericsson, whose Mobile Phones’ U.S. headquarters is in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, earlier this year brought 2,500 athletes from 72 countries.
Ericsson also intends to help with the planning and operation of the ’99 Games. Ericsson’s donation of money and services as the telecommunications equipment supplier is valued at more than $2 million.
“The athletes truly embody Ericsson’s core values of professionalism, respect and, most importantly, perseverance,” said Jeff Mandell, a spokesman for Ericsson.
